Best EV Vehicles

When it comes to buying an electric car, there’s never been a better time. Many manufacturers now offer models that combine next-generation battery tech, with practicality, quality and performance that often outclasses comparable petrol and diesel alternatives. With new models arriving every month, it’s easier than ever to switch to an EV and enjoy everything that goes with it.

As a result, we’re seeing an increasingly diverse range of Best EV vehicles across the market. While the bulk of current electric models are SUVs, there are cars, hatchbacks and even minivans available if you prefer something smaller. Plus, as prices fall, it’s becoming more affordable to buy an EV than ever before.

That’s especially true for buyers who are looking at the premium end of the market, with 2024 bringing the arrival of several new flagship electric cars that can rival the likes of Tesla’s Model Y. Hyundai’s upmarket ambitions were comprehensively realised by the launch of its Ioniq 5, which trounces premium rivals such as the Audi Q4 e-tron and Honda’s Prologue in terms of both comfort and practicality.

The new Porsche Taycan remains CAR’s overall favourite electric car, with its superb driving experience and high-end interior. The arrival of the Long Range version increases its range to 319 miles, and top-ups to 80 per cent take less than 45 minutes. Nissan’s excellent zero-emission family car, the Ariya, also deserves a mention. Its stellar blend of practicality, quality and refinement helped it to clinch last year’s Auto Express Car of the Year award.

There are more than two dozen electric models on the market that qualify for Britain’s generous EV tax incentive, making it easier than ever to switch. While there isn’t yet a wide choice of plug-in SUVs, the Volkswagen ID.7 will soon change that. This executive-level EV is one of the most advanced currently on sale and can be specified with an estate car body style (the ID.7 Tourer) for added versatility.

Alternatively, you could go for the all-new Kia EV9, which is the first proper seven-seater to make an impression on the electric car scene. Its large battery pack provides ample space for adults in all three rows, and its surprisingly quick recharge times help it to compete with petrol-powered MPVs that lack its eco-credentials. Meanwhile, Chinese EV goliath BYD’s Atto 3 is an outstanding midsize EV that offers a compelling combination of value and technology. And don’t forget that upcoming upstart Rivian has its R1T and R1S twins, which promise to be bona fide performance machines wrapped in SUV bodies.
